A useful fit for

Dry-food schedules without a phone account, including indoor feeding positions away from an outlet.

The main tradeoff

Local controls and a single eating position suit a set routine; remote changes need a different model.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I program twelve daily meals without an app or nearby outlet?

Yes. The LCD controls set the timetable locally, and four D alkaline batteries are a normal power source. They are not included; the optional wall adapter is separate.

Does Feed Now add an extra meal while leaving the next one unchanged?

No. It brings the next scheduled meal forward and advances the display to the meal after it. It is a way to move a meal early, not an unlimited extra-food button.

Can the batteries back up the optional wall adapter?

Yes. The manufacturer guide explicitly says batteries act as the backup when the adapter supplies power. Check battery condition and actual dispensing before relying on that protection.

A substantial local feeder that does not need an app

The PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed PFD00-14574 suits a fairly specific need: a repeatable dry-food routine that you can program on the feeder and run on ordinary batteries. Its LCD controls and conveyor make it a different proposition from PetSafe's connected Smart Feed. Choose Simply Feed when local operation and placement away from an outlet matter more than changing meals from your phone.

The base package has one hopper and one stainless-steel bowl. It is a way to schedule food at a shared feeding position, not to reserve a diet for a particular cat. The optional two-pet splitter is a separate accessory arrangement; it should not be assumed to come with this single-bowl model.

Build your own routine instead of accepting a preset

The user schedule supports up to twelve meals each day. Times follow fifteen-minute steps and portions run from one-eighth to four cups. Those are useful limits to compare with the routine you actually want: a very specific time outside the quarter-hour steps, or a release smaller than one-eighth cup, needs a different solution.

Default cat and dog programs are convenient starting points for the controls, not individualized feeding recommendations. Select the user mode to enter the required times and amounts. Check the clock format carefully too: the manual links twelve-hour time to cup units and twenty-four-hour time to milliliters. A different clock display can therefore also change the portion units you see.

A displayed volume is not a universal weight of food. Weigh or otherwise check what your chosen kibble produces before relying on a new plan. The feeder executes the settings; it does not decide the right daily ration for your pet.

Battery operation is a genuine placement advantage

Four D alkaline cells are the documented routine power source and are not included. A compatible wall adapter is sold separately. The manual explicitly says installed batteries become backup power when the adapter is used. This supports two useful arrangements: an entirely battery-powered feeding position, or adapter operation with battery protection against an outage.

That flexibility is more relevant than a camera if you want the feeder in an indoor corner with no convenient socket. It still requires checking battery condition and feeding operation. Do not treat a manufacturer's estimated battery life as a promise for every schedule, battery brand or food load.

Feed Now changes the sequence

Immediate Feed releases the next scheduled meal early. Afterward the display advances to the following planned meal, and the system does not allow two consecutive scheduled meals to be brought forward. This is useful when you arrive home early and want to move dinner, but it is not an unlimited extra-portion button.

Everyone who feeds the cat should understand that behavior. Otherwise, one person could bring dinner forward while another later assumes dinner is still waiting. Check the next meal displayed on the screen instead of assuming the original timetable remains unchanged after an immediate release.

Pause Feed has a different role: it suspends dispensing while retaining the plan. Remember to remove pause when the cat is using the feeder again. Slow Feed spreads eligible meals larger than one-eighth cup over fifteen minutes. It changes delivery pace, not the intended total meal; it is not a guarantee of a particular health outcome.

Capacity and food suitability

The hopper is rated for approximately twenty-four cups. PetSafe identifies dry and semi-moist kibble up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter, while the manual excludes canned, wet and moist foods. Because some warning wording says dry only, confirm a borderline semi-moist product with PetSafe rather than interpreting it as permission to use a wet meal.

A large hopper can reduce refill frequency without making food checks unnecessary. Consider how much your cat uses, how long you prefer to keep an opened supply in the hopper and whether you can comfortably remove and clean the assembly. Capacity alone is not a reason to leave a pet unattended for the entire time that food might last.

The conveyor needs a little attention

Priming fills the conveyor sections after refilling. PetSafe's current instructions use pause mode during the priming process, then require unpausing afterward. This is a practical ownership step: an apparently full hopper is not the same as a prepared food path ready for its first scheduled release.

The conveyor is hand-wash only; the bowl, holder, lid and hopper have separate dishwasher guidance. Keep the electronic base dry. During reassembly, follow the belt-alignment instructions and let the washed pieces dry completely. A feeder that is easy to program can still dispense incorrectly if its food path is assembled or primed incorrectly.

Simply Feed is a strong functional match for local scheduling, ordinary battery operation and a generous dry-food store. Choose a connected model for remote adjustments, a tray system for wet meals, or protected-access feeding when the central problem is another pet taking the food.
