A useful fit for

Remote changes to an established dry-food routine using a compatible 2.4 GHz home network.

The main tradeoff

Connected functions need app setup and normal plugged-in power; the batteries are for emergency feeding.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I change twelve dry-food meal times remotely?

This second-generation Smart Feed supports up to twelve daily scheduled meals through My PetSafe, using 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Its local button is for dispensing, not full schedule setup.

Can it normally live away from a wall outlet?

No. The exact guide calls the four D batteries backup-only and says they should not be the main supply. Use an appropriate routine-battery model for that requirement.

Does the base box feed two cats into two bowls?

The reviewed package has one bowl. A compatible Meal Splitter is a separate accessory; even a splitter does not give identified cats exclusive diets.

An app-controlled conveyor feeder with a larger food supply

The second-generation PetSafe Smart Feed PFD00-16828 suits an owner who wants to adjust a dry-food timetable remotely and prefers a conveyor dispenser to a small rotating portion wheel. It offers a 24-cup hopper, up to twelve scheduled meals each day and an included wall adapter. It is a connected feeding station, so app setup and a compatible home network are part of the purchase decision.

This exact US model should be distinguished from the locally programmed Healthy Pet Simply Feed and from other Smart Feed generations. They can look like similar large hopper feeders while meeting different control and power needs. The most useful comparison starts with whether you want phone control or programming directly on the device.

Match the food to the instructions, not just the hopper size

PetSafe's product page and the filling step in the exact model's quick-start guide describe dry or semi-moist food. The safety section also says dry food only and specifically prohibits wet, canned or moist food. Those wordings are not perfectly consistent. They do not establish canned wet-food compatibility; confirm a borderline semi-moist formulation with PetSafe before relying on it.

The 24-cup hopper is a volume specification, not a guaranteed period between refills. The food's bulk, the selected meal amounts and the need to keep the conveyor supplied all affect how you use it. Do not replace the native cup figure with an assumed weight or an unlabeled liter conversion when comparing it with another feeder.

Selectable meals range from one-eighth cup to four cups. The conveyor needs priming after assembly and when food runs low, as the quick-start guide explains. A timetable can be correct while the first output is short if the food path has not been prepared properly. Observe actual dispensing with the intended food before using the feeder for a workday routine.

What twelve daily meals and Slow Feed actually mean

Twelve refers to scheduled releases across the day. It does not refer to twelve food compartments or twelve separately protected diets. You can choose the timetable and quantity for each meal in the app, and use Feed Now for an additional release. Decide the feeding plan separately from the machine's maximum number of slots.

Slow Feed spreads scheduled amounts larger than one-eighth cup across fifteen minutes. That is a different delivery pattern, not a verified medical outcome or a guarantee that a cat will eat more slowly. It may be a useful setting to observe if you prefer a gradual release, but the open bowl still leaves the actual eating behavior to the animal.

The app is required for the connected routine

The feeder uses a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and the My PetSafe app for scheduling and remote changes. Its physical button can dispense food, but it is not a substitute for full local initial programming. If you need to create every meal time without a phone account or network setup, the locally controlled Simply Feed is the more relevant type to compare.

Low and empty hopper alerts can help you keep track of supplies. A dispensing notification does not confirm which cat ate or that the bowl is now empty. The base package includes one bowl; an optional Meal Splitter is a separate configuration, not evidence that this reviewed box already contains two simultaneous feeding stations.

Network loss and a power cut have different boundaries

PetSafe's official offline guidance says a previously stored timetable continues if the feeder still has power. You lose the ordinary connected experience while the network is down; do not assume that remote edits or phone alerts remain available. A factory reset is especially different from a temporary offline state because it deletes stored programming.

Four separately purchased D alkaline batteries are the outage backup option. The exact quick-start guide expressly says they should not be the main power source. This model can therefore meet a documented schedule-backup requirement while failing a requirement for routine battery-only placement. The batteries also do not keep the home's router or internet service running.

Cleaning and deciding whether it earns its space

The stainless bowl, holder, lid and hopper are listed as dishwasher-safe parts. Clean and dry the feeding path according to the instructions, keep the electronic base out of water and confirm the conveyor alignment when reassembling. The larger housing has to fit the feeding location as well as provide easy access for refilling and maintenance.

Choose this second-generation Smart Feed for remote timetable changes, a large native-cup hopper and backed-up scheduled dispensing. Choose a local battery feeder when no-outlet programming is more important, a wet-food tray when the food requires that format, or documented identity-controlled access when another pet must be kept away from a meal.
