Power

What keeps working when power or Wi-Fi fails?

Choose a feeder's normal power arrangement first, then check each function you need during an outage. Routine battery operation, emergency schedule backup and continued cooling are three different requirements. The presence of a battery compartment does not establish all three.

Will the feeder normally live beside an outlet?

If a suitable outlet is available, check the supplied adapter, cable routing and the exact electrical requirements. Keep the connection accessible for cleaning and inspection. A connector that fits does not, by itself, establish that a replacement adapter has the correct output or approval for the device.

Without an outlet, look for a maker-documented routine battery mode. A model intended to run on batteries normally is different from one whose batteries only bridge a temporary interruption. Rechargeable also describes the battery, not permission to make an emergency mode the everyday power arrangement.

The Cat Mate C500 specification gives a concrete example of a battery-operated tray feeder. Our C500 assessment explains that layout. Its power arrangement should not be transferred to a plugged-in camera feeder just because both schedule meals.

Separate internet loss from loss of electricity

If the router loses its internet connection while the feeder still has power, a stored feeding plan may continue locally. If the appliance itself loses power, operation depends on its backup design. One successful offline test does not establish the other behavior.

For the Granary PLAF103, the manufacturer documents schedule continuation on batteries while disabling Wi-Fi and some controls. The PLAF103 review separates normal and backup operation. That is an example of limited backup, not a universal rule for connected feeders.

Make a function-by-function list

List scheduled releases, local controls, remote changes, camera viewing, recordings, pet recognition and cooling. Beside each item, note what the matching instructions say about the normal and backup modes. A function left unexplained should stay an unanswered requirement, rather than being assumed to continue because a different function does.

For a selective-access feeder, ask whether the lid still recognizes the intended pet and how food is accessed if the battery is depleted. For a rotating tray, check what happens to its clock and next opening. For a connected hopper, check whether you can verify the stored plan after power returns.

Wet-food cooling is a separate dependency

A motor that can open a meal on battery power does not establish that a cooling system remains active. Nor does a backup duration for dispensing establish a safe food-holding duration. Use the food maker's storage directions and the exact appliance's documented mode.

The current Polar page contains differing backup-duration statements, so this guide does not assign a single universal hour figure. More importantly, a schedule-continuation claim must not be silently expanded into a cooling guarantee.

Rehearse the fallback while someone is home

Follow the manual to install or charge the specified batteries and confirm their condition. If the instructions allow an outage check, supervise it without making the cat depend on an unproven next meal. Record which functions remain available and verify the plan again when normal power returns.

Arrange a person who can respond to a missed meal, failed cooler or empty feeder. An app alert is useful only if someone can act on it. Keep measured manual-feeding instructions and the necessary food accessible to that person. The setup guide brings these checks together with location, cleaning and daily care.

Put your feeding requirements together.
